Numerous antiquated recuperating frameworks underscore the interconnection among psyche and body in mending, including Hippocrates, the dad of Western medication, who instructed that great wellbeing relies upon a parity of brain, body, and condition. our bodies and psyches are interconnected. the brain is answerable for imparting signs which are essentially the language of the body. These signs can be hormones which are a sort of compound ambassadors discharged by cells and organs. These hormones can be development factors or different synthetic substances that impact cells and neurons. there are numerous frameworks in the mind that are directs different capacities in the body. This division likewise performs such errands as loosening up the bladder, accelerating pulse and enlarging eye students. It expands pulse and pulse. Moreover, the parasympathetic division of the autonomic sensory system keeps up ordinary body capacities and saves physical assets. This division likewise performs such assignments as controlling the bladder, hindering pulse and choking eye students. above all, the harmony between the thoughtful and parasympathetic framework is incredibly fundamental. to wrap things up, the prefrontal cortex is situated in the front of the mind beneath the brow. it is answerable for character articulation and arranging of complex pra ctices and dynamic. individuals experience the association regularly in circumstances extending from mouth-watering over a delightful looking treat to butterflies before an introduction. at long last, negative results can result from the psyche and body interconnection including the inability to meet athletic, scholarly or proficient objective because of dread by the brain. 4) What is the puzzle behind the hole that associates our cerebrums to our feelings? The puzzle behind the hole that associates the cerebrums to the feelings can be spoken to in one basic word, synapses. Synapses are the driving force of correspondence; they are the cerebrum synthetic substances that impart data all through our mind and body. It is a basic procedure where the minds comprises of sensory cells called neurons which pass notes to control everything in the body. the synapse send messages from neuron to neuron which thusly decides our feelings and emotions and positive or negative mind-set. Love, Marriage And Slavery In Hurstons Novel - Free Essay Example
Inflamd by love, and urgd by deep despair, he leaves the realms of light, and upper air; daring to tread the dark Tenarian road, and tempt the shades in their obscure abode, wrote the poet Ovid of Orpheus love for Eurydice (10.17-20). His passion for his bride, whose life was cut short by a viper on their wedding day, was so strong he dared to face the perils of the netherworld and stand before Hades and Persephone to request Eurydicers return to the living. Romantic love stories, similar to those of the Greek, have been told throughout Western history. The most famous being told by the Great Bard â⬠Romeo Juliet â⬠in which the lovers cannot live without the other and offer their lives so that they might join each other in the afterlife. Supportive, equality, and mutuality are the ideal and as such are not always consuetudinary. The lure of eros-philia-agape is inextricably bound to suffering, and yet the human condition causes us to search for the fairytale endings: the ?they lived happily ever after. In some cases, when the ideal is neglected to an extreme degree, marriage can turn into servitude. The protagonist of Zora Neale Hurstons Their Eyes Were Watching God, Janie Crawford, seeks the perfect lover, but each time falls short; being engulfed with bondage. It is not surprising then that an early target of the feminist movement was marriage. Sheila Cronan provided an iteration of the prevailing sentiment when she wrote: The institution of marriage ?protects women in the same way that the institution of slavery was said to ?protect blacks; that is, that the word protection in this case is simply a euphemism for oppression marriage is a form of slavery. (214) Given the history of African-Americans and the institution of slavery, the reference is not one to be passed over quickly. Slavery included corporal punishment, compulsory labor, ownership by another, and for African-American women it often involved forced exogamous relationships. To some degree, examples of each are found in the marriages of Janie Crawford. The choice Janie makes as to where to begin her autobiography allows the reader to understand her motivation. She sits relaxed under a pear tree, watching bees move from flower to flower, a symbiotic relationship essential to pollination. The imagery Hurston employs is orgasmic (sink into the sanctum of a bloom; arch to the love embrace; ecstatic shiver; and frothing with delight) and Janie exclaims, So this was a marriage (Hurston 10-11). Donald Marks equates this imagery with an organicist ideology, which characterizes her romantic relationships with Johnny Taylor and Tea Cake. Through this Marks understands it as a pursuit of passion and one free from social constructs, pure love (152,154). It is carefree love that Janie desires. She sees harmony within it and finds it to be part of the natural order. Her marriage with Logan Killicks appears to change Janiers perspective; She knew now that marriage did not make love (Hurston 25). Yet the allure of natural love, even within marriag e, never leaves her. Love is her desire for freedom that remains enkindled in the depth of her soul. It is evidenced in Janiers meetings with each of her lovers (Hurston 28,101-102). The ember that sustains Janie also contributes to her disillusionment as she never finds the ?happily ever after in her lovers. Her marriages are then transformed into slavery, oppressive and murderous. The specter of slavery is introduced early in the text as Janie recounts the story told to her by her grandmother, the slave of a white man who used her for his sexual gratification and impregnated her (Hurston 16-17). Nanny tells her own story in an effort to persuade Janie to make choices based on reason, i.e. prosperity and social mobility. Judie Newman believes that Nanny attempts to show Janie the path out of slavery slaves were denied choices and stability (820). The irony is that the ?choice is taken away from Janie because Nanny arranges the marriage with Logan Killicks over the objections of Janie. Janiers first marriage begins loveless, but she believes that love will eventually enter the relationship. Elements of their life together briefly satisfy the love needs of Janie but when Logan had stopped talking in rhymes to her [and] ceased to wonder at her long black hair and finger it (Hurston 25), a change comes over Janie. A simple move from honeymoon to reality arrives when Logan asks Janie to help him with the chores, which is symbolized with the purchase of a mule. The mule is a prominent symbol in Their Eyes Were Watching God, appearing on two different occasions. The first referenced by Nanny when she tells Janie that [d]e n***er woman is de mule uh de world (Hurston 14). The second was the hapless creature that is the laughing stock of Eatonville. There is a direct connection between the idea of a mule and slavery in Their Eyes Were Watching God, even slavery within slavery. It was sexual exploitation and political oppression that hampered the female slavers ability to dream higher (Sadoff 8). The mule then implies more than physical labor. It is an animal that is yoked and driven by its owner to do someone elsers bidding. Derek Collins equates this revelation in Janie with a movement toward self-determination (146). Though moving in the right direction, Collins does not capture the totality of the movement. It must be centered within the framework of her desire for natural love, of which self-determination is only a part. She realizes that she will never attain her ideal with Logan. It cannot be mere coincidence that Jody Starks enters the story the very afternoon Logan decides to purchase a second mule (the beginning of Logan and Janiers life together). Jody comes along and offers her an escape from Logan she takes it: You aint got no mo business wid uh plow [or] cuttin up no seed ptaters neither (Hurston 28). A path to freedom has been offered to her. The proverbial last straw on the camel (or mule)rs back is when Logan threatens to kill her with an axe if she does not follow his order to stay with him. This is enough to push Janie to choose a life of potential happiness with Jody rather than a life of slavery with Logan: From now on until death she was going to have flower dust and springtime sprinkled over everything. A bee for her bloom. Her old thoughts were going to come in handy now, but new words would have to be made and said to fit them. (Hurston 31) The words used by Hurston immediately recall the reader to Janiers revelation under the old pear tree. She, unlike Orpheus, has persuaded Charon to allow her to cross the River Styx in search of her beloved again. Though the seed for her enslavement has been planted at the sam e time. Janie recognizes in Jody what she thinks of as a natural-like love, only to later come to the realization that his love is another form of ownership. It does not take long for Janie to realize the differences between her own view of marriage and Jodyrs,Janie soon discovers that she is merely one of his possessions, a beautiful status symbol (Smith 29). Her personhood is denied when she is treated as an object. Then along comes the mule, symbolic of a critical shift in their relationship. Janiers role in the marriage is further devalued with the constant degradation of her property value in the eyes of Jody. Jody purchases a worn out old and mistreated in order to set it free and impress Janie with his magnanimity (Hurston 53-54). It is certainly an act of kindness to the animal. Perhaps in the mind of Jody he saw this as a symbolic act of Janiers freedom, but Janie herself interprets it as a symbol of her own slavery. Jody owns the mule as he owns Janie and is capable of disposing of either as he sees fit; the mule to retirement and Janie to silent shop work. Starks tyranny, his unwillingness to permit Janie to blossom, shatters her dream of the pear tree (Lupton 46). Hurston later describes Janie in the terms of a broken mule, saying her soul was affected (72). Hurstonrs use of soul can been seen as analogous to that quest for natural love. The ember was not snuffed out, merely buried deep within her. A fateful day in the store provides Janie the opportunity to enliven her passion. She miscuts a plug of tobacco and Jody berates her yo rump hangin nearly to yo knees (Hurston 74). Janie becomes livid and finally finds her voice once again. The judging of Janie by her appearance, particularly her muscle tone, cannot be seen as only an uncouth insult. Instead, it must be judged within the context of livestock; of which slaves were considered a part. The pity of the mule is based on its lack of functionality as a work animal and now Jody is making a similar claim toward Janie. The reminder of bondage awakens within her the possibility of achieving and dreaming beyond her present state. Only with the the death of Jody is Janie freed from his servitude. Tea Cake, an unlikely drifter, finds himself the preferred suitor of the widowed Janie. Janie quickly warms to him and the reader begins to see the flickers of natural love. When Janie asks his name, her response to Tea Cake is flirtatious, So you sweet as all dat (Hurston 93). Janie has been away from natural love for a long time and in the intervening period created her new vocabulary. Here she is reclaiming the old words, but in a broken way. Sweet is a remembrance of the honey, which is the nectar produced from the love-dance between the bee and the flowers of the pear tree. It is time to charm Charon once again. Romeo and Juliet, the story of Orpheus, and other cultural epics of love, end tragically; perfect love is always beyond the grasp of mortals. A natural assumption then would be that Tea Cakers contraction of rabies is another example of this. The manifestation of Tea Cakers obsession with jealousy in his delusional state may offer another view. As the disease progresses, he slowly loses his humanity. While Tea Cake may be willing to attack anyone in his condition, he keeps returning his focus on Janie and questions of her faithfulness to him. The final and remaining element of his personality is jealousy, a form of possession. The presence of jealousy prior to Tea Cakers infection is significant. When Janiers friend Mrs. Turner comes by the house and talks up her brother, Janie refuses to even consider him, Ah is married now, so ?taint no use in considerin (Hurston 137). Tea Cake hears the entire conversation: Tea Cake had a brain storm before the week was over he had whipped Janie. Not because her behavior justified his jealousy, but it relieved that awful fear inside him. Being able to whip her reassured him in possession. (Hurston 140) It was not rabidity that brought forth the jealousy. It was already present and not in a tangential way; it was at the core of Tea Cakers being. Hurston is deliberate in placing the symbolism of the mule in each of the relationships Janie Crawford had with her lovers. They are the markers of her slavery. Subtly, Hurston shifts the mule from being an external character to being personified in Janie herself. Even with Tea Cake, janie is not given a true choice, After dis, you betta come git uh job uh work out dere (Hurston 126). No longer is the mule doing the work, as with Logan, nor the mule acting as surrogate, as with Jody. Janie has become the passive mule doing the will of her master. Tea Cakers death needed to occur to allow Janie the possibility to continue to seek that which her heart desired: the flight of bees in search of sweet nectar. From the apian revelation of her youth to the struggles on the muck of Florida, Janie Crawford refuses to accept anything less than perfect love. Her marriages lacked support, equality, and mutuality; and instead became prisons. She was not one to sit idle; the fire was too strong in her. And so when Janie returns to Eatonville Tea Cake lives only through memory and they make pictures of love and life against the wall (Hurston 184). Through memory alone can love be perfect, and Janie is able to effectuate her control for the first time. Works Cited Collins, Derek. Essay on Hate Groups on the Internet - 3671 Words
The Web of Hate Technology has provided our society with numerous innovations that have been created to improve the quality of life on a daily basis. One such innovation is the Internet. The access to a wide variety of information is perhaps the most valuable tool, as well as the most important tool, that we have entering the twenty-first century. There are virtually no limits on how much can be achieved through the use of the Internet. This is not, however, necessarily a good thing. The hate group prides itself on the common background of its members who usually share the same religious views as well as ethnicity . Some well known hate groups include the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, skinheads, and Aryan Nation to name a few. These groups are primarily white Christians and oppose blacks, Asians, Hispanics, homosexuals, and Jews. According to the Anti-Defamation League, there are hundreds of hate groups in the United States alone who maintain websites that are accessed by thousands. The Bombing Of Hiroshima And Nagasaki - 1051 Words
The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is one of the most talked about events in human history. It was the first and last time an atomic bomb was used in the history of the world. The bombing did not only mark the end of a battle with the Japanese but provided humanity a first-hand preview into the effects of the man-made device. Since the bombing there have been many discussions such as: who should possess such power, will mankind be the reason for its own demise, and why did America decide to use such a strategy against the Japanese. Those questions and many others will forever remain unanswered but history gives us a glimpse into what led America to such a tragic event. As most know, World War II began in 1939. The participants ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The United States knew that if it were to be successful during World War II it had to be on the same level as its opponents. The goal of the Manhattan Project was to quickly gather all the required information and put an atomic bomb in the hands of the United States. It required the help of many researchers and scientists, most famously, Albert Einstein. As the project took off it was supervised and controlled by the Office of Scientific Research and Development but as the United States became involved in the war, the War Department took responsibility for the project as well. To establish research centers and provide the structures needed to conduct such test the U.S. Army Corps of Engineersââ¬â¢ Manhattan District got involved because most of the work prior had been done at Columbia University in Manhattan. As time pressed on the Manhattan Project finally completed the Atomic Bomb in 1945. On July 16, 1945, the United States tested the first Atomic Bomb (code name: trinity) on Alamogordo Air
Bullying In the Workplace International Labour Organization
Question: Discuss about theBullying In the Workplace forInternational Labour Organization. Answer: Introduction Bullying is a very big problem in the workplace currently especially in the medical profession (International Conference of Labour Statisticians, International Labour Organization, 2008). Bullying is essentially a repeated, inappropriate or unreasonable behavior directed towards an employee or a group of employees that in one way or the other creates a risk to health and safety (Balcerzak, 2015). Unreasonable behavior, in this case, comprise of behaviors that a reasonable person having regard for the circumstances would see a humiliating, victimizing undermining or threatening. This paper will focus on the definition of workplace bullying, features of workplace bullying, common categories of workplace bullying, what cannot be considered as workplace bullying, effects of workplace bullying as well actions that should be taken to reduce workplace bullying. Workplace bullying is the less favorable treatment of an employee usually by one or more employees which intimidates, harms, threatens, degrades, ridicules, insults or humiliates an employee or employees whether in front of co-workers, visitors, clients, customers or alone. There are several features the characterize workplace bullying (Brohl, 2013). It can be direct where the employee openly insults or humiliates another employee or it can be covert where the bullying is secretive and it is done through rumors and gossip. Examples of direct bullying consist of abusive remarks, abusive behavior towards another employee, offensive or aggressive language as well as constant unreasonable or unconstructive remarks. Covert character includes unreasonably ignoring the employee, deliberate exclusion or alienation of the employee from normal work interaction as well as the allocation of demeaning jobs that are below the employees level of qualification (Jenkins, 2013). It can be between co-workers. This form of bullying is also called lateral bullying. It occurs among colleagues. Workplace bullying can be intentional or accidental. Accidental bullying is whereby an employee unintentionally erupts and frightens colleagues but they soon apologize and vow never to repeat again. Intentional bullying in the workplace is whereby an employee deliberately harms or intimidates another employee repeatedly (Quigg, 2015). It can be face to face or through technology. Face to face bullying involves intimidating or harassing another employee directly. Another bully may opt to use social media, for example, whatsapp or Facebook to spread rumors to humiliate or tarnish the name of a colleague (Needham, 2003). Workplace bullying can be downward or upward. Downward bullying involves superiors who bully their subordinates while upward bullying involves workers bullying the managers (Quigg, 2015). Common categories of workplace bullying comprise of a threat to professional status, personal attacks, social isolation, work related harassment as well as spreading rumors. Examples of threats to professional rumors include public belittling, humiliation, attempts to humiliate in front of colleagues, undermining of work as well as removal of areas of responsibility without any consultation. Personal attacks can be in terms of vilification, verbal abuse as well as all forms of intimidation including throwing things, invasion of personal space, physical violence as well as reading information without permission. Social isolation involves acts like exclusion for social events such as team building seminars. Withholding of information which may be fundamental for the employee to do his or her work effectively is also classified as social isolation. Work related harassment involves assigning of meaningless tasks, unrealistic workloads, and timeframes as well as sabotaging or taking credi t for someone elses hard work. Spreading rumors involves acts like spreading malicious gossip, innuendo as well as sarcasm (Brohl, 2013). There is a thin line between what can be considered as bullying and what is not. This is important so as to prevent accusing a fellow employee falsely which can be very damaging to his or her career. Some poor behaviors or skills deficit can be interpreted as bullying for example interpersonal skills, communication skills, coping skills as well as leadership skills. Constructive criticism is also most often confused with bullying (Quigg, 2015). Interpersonal skills are tools which are employed by an individual for the purposes of interacting with others properly for work to be as expected. Individual exhibiting poor interpersonal skills in the workplace cannot be considered a bully. When a supervisor lacks these important skills then chances are the subordinates will feel like they are being bullied hence creating an unfavorable environment in the workplace (White, 2013). Communication is the art of transferring information from one place to another. Possessing effective communication skills in the workplace ensures that an employee is able to convey information to people clearly and simply in such a way that everybody understands what is expected to be done. Poor communication skills lead to errors as a result of failure to understand and when employees are reprimanded as a result of the errors, they tend to feel like they are being bullied (Caponecchia Wyatt, 2011). Poor coping skills can also be misinterpreted as bullying. Coping skills are essentially ways that people use to deal with their various stressors. Each and every person has his or her own way of dealing with stress. The human nervous system is equipped in such a way that it can handle a certain amount of stress without any symptoms showing and once again this amount varies from person to person. The moment these levels are surpassed, then and individual immediately starts to experience the physical and emotional effects of stress. This experience automatically changes a persons behavior. Coping strategies can be constructive or destructive. Destructive coping strategies hurt social relationships, result in new stress-related injuries, make preexisting problems worse or even put pressure on the relationship between co-workers. The destructive strategies usually involve behaviors and communications that may be misinterpreted as bullying (Brohl, 2013). Poor leadership skills cannot be considered as bullying. Leadership is all about influencing people for the purposes of achieving certain objectives. Good leadership skills in the workplace are those who look beyond their own self-interest and encourage others to do the same, instill trust, create and communicate positive and realistic vision as well as respect and maintain personal and organizational values. A leader who does not possess these fundamental qualities will tend to exhibit behaviors almost similar to those of a bully. If an employee does not feel that she is getting enough tangible support and information for work to be done. Then he or she may be compelled to conclude that he or she is being bullied (Needham, 2003). Constructive criticism cannot also be considered as bullying. Positive criticism involves measuring an employees performance again a fair criterion, counseling him or her when performance goes down as well as taking disciplinary measures when an employee breaches workplace policy. An employee who goes through this kind of process may feel like he or she is being mistreated by the management officers but in reality, it is just a process to ensure that employees are accountable for their actions while in the workplace (Quigg, 2015). Workplace bullying has effects on the victim, co-workers, bully as well as on the workplace. As far as the victim is concerned, bullying affects the person physically to such an extent that he or she may suffer from stress related illnesses. The victim also suffers mentally because he or she is always in constant fear of being humiliated in front of fellow colleagues.in fact, an employee is a target of bullies, starts each week with a pit of anxiety and he or she cannot wait for the weekend so that he or she can get away from the workplace. Emotionally, the victim feels nervous, ashamed, afraid and his or her self-esteem goes down significantly. The social life of the victim is also affected primarily because he or she may withdraw from social interaction and activities. Some victims end up engaging in harmful activities like use of alcohol or drugs thinking that all they will forget all them workplace troubles and stresses permanently. Employees who have been victims of workplace bu llying tend to suffer get ulcers, high blood pressure and usually have trouble sleeping (White, 2013). Bully also has a significant effect on co-workers. Some of the victims colleagues may feel guilty as a result of watching the constant bullying being directed at their colleague since they know very well there is nothing they can do to help him or her. They may feel a lot of anger towards the organizations management allowing the bad culture to continue without any action being taken gain the perpetrators of bullying. The rest of the employees may express signs of fear since they can as easily be bullied without any action being taken. Primarily because of constantly watching other employees being bullied, co-workers may have the physical, emotional, mental as well as social responses that are similar to those of the victim (Rayner, Hoel, Cooper, 2002). The bully may not realize the effect he or she is having on others. They may also lack communication skills, interpersonal skills, leadership skills as well as coping skills (Quigg, 2015). Workplace bullying also affects an organization negatively. In an institution where bullying is rampant, the performance of the institution goes down since the employees lack peace of mind which is needed for success to be realized. Bullied workers not only lose motivation, they also lose time since they are mainly preoccupied with networking for support, trying to defend themselves, ruminating about the situation, planning how to deal with the situation as well as avoiding the bully. Accidents and incidents also increase in the workplace. Absenteeism, lateness, as well as employee turnover, becomes the order of the day (Oade, 2009). There are many reasons why workplace bullying is common. First, there are very few laws that address this issue. The laws that exist that touch on bullying are not enough to protect victims of bullying. The laws that exist are not clear enough to ensure that the consequences harsh enough to compel bullies to abandon their vice (Quigg, 2015). Secondly, people do not talk about the issue. It is usually embarrassing and humiliating to be bullied and very few individuals would want to relive the experience by talking about it. Most of the victims prefer to forget about the bad experience. The bystanders are also powerless since they cannot do anything so everybody ends up not talking about it (Needham, 2003). Thirdly, there are no channels designated purposely for reporting bullying. In most organizations, bullying is not considered an issue so the management of the organization does not feel the need to create a channel for victims to report bullying cases. This has contributed to the vice increasing since the bullies know that they will not be accountable for their actions (White, 2013). The economy has also contributed to the spread of bullying. Many economies in the world are not doing very well so it becomes very hard for people to secure jobs and those few who do prefer to tolerate bullying since they are aware that chances of getting another job are very slim. For bullying to be reduced in the workplace, then relevant laws should be made for the purposes of protecting the victims in the workplace. Stiff penalties and jail time will ensure that bullies tone down their bad behaviors significantly (Suffolk University., Campaign against Workplace Bullying Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology, 2000). Organizations should ensure that there are proper channels designated for reporting bullying. This will ensure that those who bully others in the workplace are punished for their actions and the victims get the necessary help (White, 2013). Organizations should make efforts to eliminate this vice by education their employees on the negative effects of bullying on the victim, workplace as well as co-workers. By creating awareness then people will discuss its negative effects and eventually it will start decreasing until it is eradicated entirely (Randle, 2006). All in all, workplace bullying continues to be a very big problem in the workplace. Bullying can be direct or covert, intentional or incidental, face to face or via technology, downward or upward as well as between co-workers. However, having poor communication, coping, interpersonal as well as leadership skills cannot be considered as bullying. Constructive criticism is also not bullying. Bullying has negative effects on the victim, co-workers, bully as well as on the workplace. The main reasons why bullying is common in the workplace place is because of lack of proper channels of reporting, lack of proper bullying laws that protect the victim as well as harsh economies. For workplace bullying to be reduced, organizations need to create better channels for reporting bullies and create awareness of the negative effects of bullying. Governments should also make efforts of coming up with laws aimed at protecting the victims of bullying and punishing perpetrators of bullying. References Balcerzak, J. G.
